Question for Mac-Wielding Geometry Teachers

I can do the British £, the retail ™, and even John Mayer's tiny ∞, but I can't seem to find this anywhere...

Anyone know how to easily access the congruency sign from the keyboard?

I'm tired of doing this:

I teach Geometry and use a macbook at home. What program are you using? I use the MS Office suite, so if you don't, this may not apply... For the specific example that you posted, the easiest way (in my opinion) would be to use the built in Equation Editor to write your entire congruence statement and have it display in line with the text. I would have to go home to my mac to remember how to get the congruence symbol as a text character outside of Equation Editor. I know that it can be done, but to find it the first time takes a few steps, if I recall correctly.

Hope this helps!

Have a look at my post here http://mathsclass.net/comments/maths-symbols-in-word-mac/.

You can get that symbol by holding Alt/Option 2245, but to do this, you must follow a couple of other steps to have a language flag in your menubar, and from that menu be able to pick "Unicode Hex Input".

If I was making this, I'd do the whole congruence statement in MathType and copy and paste it in. Sorry I know that's not what you were asking.
